Walk Around the World - Basildon
Our walk takes us across Langdon Hills which lie across the A13 and A127 near Basildon. This walk, through one of the largest collections of nature reserves in South Essex, takes in the old Plotlands of the Eastend and offers views across the Thames to Kent. On a clear day you can see as far as Southend Pier and the North Sea.
The park sits on a 120m crescent shapes ridge – ‘The Long Hill’ and apparently there is nowhere higher between the pub and the North Pole! Langdon Hills Country Park was saved from development in the 1930’s when Essex County Council purchased it as Green Belt land. The wonderful woods and meadows are home to 50 species of breeding birds and 28 species of butterflies. There are also badger and the Great Crested Newts and bats.
As the area is now threatened by the Thames Gateway development, now may one of your last chances to enjoy it in its current state and raise money for Autism in the UK.
The walk will commence and finish in Westley Heights car park behind the Harvester Pub (formerly The Crown) on the B1007 between Corringham and Laindon (see map). It will comprise two circuits with the pub at the beginning, middle and end!
Why not come and enjoy what promises to be a great day out and do your bit for Autism and Conservation. If you would like to join the walk, give me a call.
